Close to the Bahrain International airport ,opposite the seef mall arad is the Arad fort(Qal'at Arad).Formerly guarding a separate island of its own.The fort was built in the typical style of Islamic forts during the 15th century before the portuguese invasion of Bahrain in AD1622.the entrance fee is 1BD and the opening hours are friday 3-6pm,sat and thur 9am-6pm,sun-wed 7am-2pm.
I visited the fort at around 3pm..on the first impression it looked abandoned, although it was clean and seemed renovated but still maintains its initial Traditional look which is restored with sea stones, lime, sand and palm trunks. In its present location ,it overlooks various sea passages of Muharraq's shallow sea shores.Apparently i came to learn that ,there was and inaccessible marine channel which was controlled by the local people to prevent ships from breaking through to the island where the fort is located.
The fort is square and on every corner there is a cylindrical tower. It is surrounded by a small trench which used to be filled with water from wells that were drilled especially for this purpose. The fort was used as a defensive fortress throughout history.
The fort has no guides nor signs giving more details about the site, therefore initial research is required if you want to know more about the place or you can get a tour guide.
I didn't spend too much time at the fort since there is not much to see apart from the site itself..still is a wonderful experience to see the different forts in different countries.Only thing i could recommend is writing more details about the fort in signs just for the visitors to be more aware and learn something from the experience atleast.
