Mount Longonot Day Trip Hiking Tour

Hiking to the top of the Great Rift Valley will give you the chance to experience the freedom and awesome wilderness of East Africa ,and still be home in time for dinner.Mt. Longonot is just less than 2780m.

It was one of our Gym's Hike ( Fitness 360 gym) and i decided to jump in because why not. Fitness is next to godliness right? any takers?No? Okay then.We left Nairobi at around 6:30 am and the journey took approximately one and a half hours.Although we took slightly longer since we stopped by the Rift Valley View point along the way to enjoy the view and take afew pictures.

Your start at 2150m and ,like all good uphill hikes,it will lure you into a false sense of security with a slow gentle rise to the first hill.This gives you a chance to get your lungs and limbs up for the second section.

At the end of each section is a rest point where you can prepare yourself for the next part of your journey.I must admit at first i was expecting the mountain to be too steep ,since when one thinks about mountains you imagine snow at the top and the entire process taking days or even weeks to reach the crater.Although i came to realise Mt.Longonot is more like the beginner type of mountain that you can practise with then go for the Real deal which are like Mt.Kenya,Mt Kilimanjaro and even work your way to Mt.Everest someday.

I have to admit the most challenging section is the final climb to the crater.It is the steepest and there is literally no place to step on since the terrain has gone through years and years of erosion thus making deep cracks.But all in all once through with that final section,the view of L.Naivasha, the wide crater , the great rift valley and the cool breeze that literally feels like an air conditioned room makes the entire process worthwhile.

The whole trek is approximately 8-9 km long,Then if you still have enough stamina you can go around the crater for another 1 hour. The entire hike going up and coming down took us around 2 hours.Since we came in as a group we had carried our own lunch therefore made our own picnic just outside the gate.

The entire experience was splendid and i therefore would recommend it for people who like challenges.N/B; if you are not an active person or physically fit ,i would recommend exercising for about 1 month prior to your trip, to prepare your body for the challenge.
