The Giraffe Centre is a creation of the African Fund for Endangered Wildlife(A.F.E.W. Kenya) ,a kenyan non-profit organization located in Duma RD, Karen .Approximately 5 km away from Nairobi CBD. It's opening hours are from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.The entry fees are sh.250 for resident adults and Sh.1000 for tourists.
I remember going there on a sunday Afternoon at around 2 pm..It wasn't too crowded although on asking the tour guides i was told that midday is usually the peak hours. The Tour guides are friendly and answer to any questions asked ,while informing the visitors more about the giraffes and their names.
What was particularly fun about the tour is actually getting to feed the giraffes with small pallets that are provided for by the centre, and getting to touch their velvet like skin.I actually got to kiss one of the Giraffes haha it was terrifying at first but after being told that their saliva is actually an antiseptic it became more easier knowing i won't be contracting any diseases.
You can also spot warthogs snuffling about in the mud, and there's an interesting self-guided forest walk through the adjacent Gogo River Bird Sanctuary.
The storyline behind what inspired the commencing of the project was that the Rothschild's giraffe species had been pushed to the brink of extinction by severe habitat loss in Western Kenya. There were no more than 120 Rothschild's giraffe( which differ from other giraffe subspecies in that there is no patterning below the knee) in the wild.Today the population numbers more than 300,and the centre has Successfully released these charismatic creatures into Lake Nakuru National Park(home to around 45 giraffes ),Mwea National Reserve ,Ruma National Park and Nasalot National Reserve.
To get here from central Nairobi by public transport,Take matatu 24 via Kenyatta Ave to the Hardy shops and walk from there.Alternatively ,take matatu 26 to magadi Rd.,and walk through from Mukoma Rd.A taxi from city centre should cost around sh.1500.An Uber or Taxify can as well be used.
